Collective Bargaining

So you guys are heading into Collective Bargaining. The SEIU has been bargaining with CBI for 2 years now, longer really since the Collective Agreement (CA) expired back in March 2012 so hopefully they were trying before March 31, 2012.

Cancare only got forced into the SEIU in about August of 2013 and *never* doubt that it was the SEIU who forced them into the union. (That group of employees is worth about $250,000.00 a year in dues.) So, while the CBI group may know about bargaining, the rest don't. There are a few things you should be aware of:
  • The union will have a negotiator who they chose, you don't get a say about that.
    They will have some PSW's on the bargaining committee but those people have no say, all decisions are up to the union negotiator.
    CBI & Cancare are *not* bargaining with you PSW's, they are bargaining with the SEIU. They are expressly forbidden to talk to the PSW's about anything to do with bargaining.
    SEIU is starting from where CBI was in 2012, *not* where Cancare was in 2013.
    You can be pretty sure that you will end up, if not exactly were RCCP ended up, close enough as to make no difference. (hopefully without the strike part).
    You will not be able to see what the SEIU is settling for until you have to vote on it.
    Even if you are on the bargaining committee, there will be secrets.
    Once bargaining begins, your employer is not allowed to give raises or anything like them, they would be considered to be trying to influence you.
    The SEIU has its own goals in bargaining and those goals might not match yours.
I will try to find the Collective Agreement that RCCP and SEIU ended up with after the strike in December. They did not get benefits, they have vacation that is pretty much "labour standards" minimums. That's about all I remember but leave it with me.
